Summer Prep: Create Summer Memories

Beach and sand on a summer day

I’m trying to be intentional this Summer, and even though it’s our busiest work season, I’ve been taking some time to breathe, go to the beach and relax. But somehow the summer is still flying by and for me the busiest season as a mom is about to approach. I can’t believe it’s already August! That means summer is more than halfway done! With just a few weeks left, read on for some tips on how to create summer memories within the chaos of the busy times.

Expect the Stress

Season changes always bring a little chaos. As camps are ending and schools are not starting for another few weeks, schedule changes come with the territory. So plan ahead! As soon as you get the non negotiable dates of meetings, first days of school, or events for work or for your kids, mark them down. If you have specific places you wanted to visit this summer, book them now. Avoid the last minute shock of summer being over by preparing for it.

Prep for Incoming Clutter

End of Summer brings a lot of memories, and a lot of clutter. Seashells collected at the beach, summer camp projects, new school calendars all pile up easily. If you don’t yet have a memory box for your kids, make them now. Each kid gets their own box to fill with special memories. I love using the Container Store’s Our Sweater Box for this. It’s the perfect size, not too big and not too small. Once the box is full, it’s time to declutter and make room for the new memories. It’s a fun way to keep the clutter at bay. It’s also a great way to teach your kids about prioritizing what fits and what can be declutter. With a memory box for each kid, you can do away with the stress of clutter. School calendars and important incoming information should go straight to your family command center. That can be in the kitchen closet, near your entryway or wherever you keep the important family information. If you’re not sure where to begin, reach out, we can help you set up the command center for your family to start the upcoming year off right.

Small Moments can be Big Memories

With just a few weeks left to the summer, don’t stress over not having “big” plans left. Our children want our presence not our presents. Little things that show them that they matter is what creates the memories. Last night, we did a “smores” night in my house. With only the little kids home, and the big ones away at camp, I am being intentional to create summer memories for them too. It was too hot to open the fire pit, so we just put marshmallows on a skewer, pulled out the matches and chocolate covered cookies, and in just 5 minutes, the kids were happily eating roasted marshmallows smores and having a great time. It took 5 minutes of prep, 10 minutes of an activity, and they felt like they had an amazing time! Going to the beach, even if just for an hour, having a family night swim, or watching a late night movie are all “small” things, but they create large memories.
