Find your Calm Amidst the Expected Chaos of Moving with Organizing Tips

Are you thrilled that you just closed on your new home, or signed a lease on a brand new space? Or is the idea of moving starting to overwhelm you? You may have thought that you could do it yourself, but now that you have started packing, you might realize that packing alongside juggling everyday life is a bit trickier than you thought. Don’t worry, the packing and organizing is doable! I’ve been there myself and have countless clients make their moving process a lot smoother.
Tip #1: Don’t Delay in Decluttering and Organizing
If there is only one tip that I’d give you to make your move easier, it would be this! You don’t want to be trekking ridiculously heavy boxes out of one home and right into another, only to have to start decluttering after a long day of moving. The good thing about decluttering is that it can be done in advance, and it saves you money! You won’t have to pay to move more boxes that you don’t need. You can start a few weeks or even a few months before your move. It’s never too early to declutter. Think of your new home as a fresh start, and don’t bring old clutter with you.
Tip #2: Make a Mobile Moving Kit so Your Packing can be Organized
Grab a caddy or a small box and put all your packing essentials in it. You can easily move this portable kit with you around the house so that you don’t need to be running around the house looking for a roll of tape. I’d recommend you include packing tape, sharpies, scissors, a box cutter, some labels or label tape. It’s not a bad idea to grab a cleaning bottle and some paper towel so you can wipe down any dusty items before packing it.
Tip #3: Liberally Label Like Items
You might think that you will remember what you own, but once the box is taped and sealed, you will likely forget what is inside and what room it belongs in. I love using different colored post-its, labels, or tape to tag each box as to what room it belongs in. This is also really helpful for the movers and the moving company and they can easily know where to put each box. They see that the red boxes go in the living room, and the blue in their kitchen. It makes moving easier and less stressful for everyone!
Tip #4: Separate Out Your Staples

Remember to set aside a bag dedicated to your everyday essentials and keep it with you. Any items that you need in the first 12 hours should be in that bag, such as your toiletries, medication, toothbrush etc. Label one box on the truck as OPEN FIRST – that box should have box cutters, scissors, and anything else that will help you unpack.
